LOUISVILLE SWEEPS LEXINGTON IN GAME THREE VICTORY

Louisville, KY-Completing the three game sweep, Louisville topped Lexington 54-50 in Freedom Hall. After tonight’s contest both squads hold 7-5 overall records and are tied for second place in the Midwest Division.

Louisville's offense looked more in rhythm during the opening drive, which lasted for eight minutes however, could not post a score. Following a blocked field goal attempt by Danny Kight, the Horsemen were able to post the first touchdown within two plays as Offensive Player of the game

Eddie Eviston connected with John Cooper just over the goal line. Eviston finished 22 of 36 throwing two interceptions for 285 yards. Suiting up for his first start with the Fire, quarterback Danny Southwick quickly responded finding a wide open Tymere Zimmerman for the first Louisville score of the evening. Southwick ended the contest 13 of 21 for 151 yards.

A missed kick by Kight left the Fire trailing 6-7 with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter. On third and eight, Keller Speaks and Bernard Jackson grabbed Eviston for the sack and an incomplete pass on the fourth down gave the ball back over to Louisville. With less than a minute remaining in the first quarter Southwick completed a 22-yard pass to Ricardo Lenhart marking the score at 13-7.

Leading off the second quarter with a score Eviston completed a 10-yard pass to Chad Spencer, putting the Horsemen up 14-13. After a hard hit, Southwick bounced back to put a 29-yard pass in Lonnell Dewalt's hands giving the Fire a 20-14 advantage midway through the quarter. Lexington went for it on fourth down and came up with six points as Eviston completed a second touchdown pass to Spencer. The Horsemen lead by one with 4:00 minutes remaining in the first half. With two seconds left in the half, Defensive player of the game Matt Forbes returned a missed field goal attempt 53 yards for a touchdown, allowing the Fire to lead the Horsemen 26-21 at halftime.

Rookie Dominic Ross gave Louisville an opportunity to advance their lead with an interception early in the third quarter, as Matt Bassuener turned it into a touchdown connecting with Dewalt for his second touchdown pass of the game. However, another missed kick by Kight marked the score at 32-21. Eviston and Spencer teamed up for a score and successful two point conversion, cutting the lead down to three points. Taking the lead with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter Eviston completed his fourth touchdown pass of the contest to Cooper, allowing the Horsemen to take a four point lead.

The Horsemen extended their lead to 43-32 following a completed pass to Ryan Mitch. Bassuener rushed in for a score and two point conversion, bringing to Fire within three points. With 2:47 remaining in the game, the Horsemen found their way into the end zone setting the score at 50-40. Bassuener put up a 18-yard pass to Dewalt for his third score of the game, once again bringing Louisville within three points. A last minute fumble recovered by Jerome Jones gave the Fire a chance to take the lead. With 16 seconds remaining in the contest Bassuener connected with PNC MVP of the game Tymere Zimmerman for the score, putting the fire up by four. Matt Forbes ended Lexington's last chance for a touchdown with an interception at the front of the end zone. Bassuener finished the game with 9 of 12 with four scores for 116 yards.

With no time to rest the Fire head to Youngstown, Ohio to face the Mahoning Valley Thunder on Friday, June 27 at 7pm. Louisville defeated the Thunder 53-22 during their first meeting of the 2008 season. Louisville returns home on Saturday, July 12 to play the Albany Conquest at 7:00 P.M.
